Surprised to see almost no Hovhaness torrents anywhere on the web.  Hovhaness was an American composer of Armenian heritage, and is considered one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century.  For example, he wrote at least 67 symphonies.



Hovhaness rejected the atonal movement, preferring to keep his music modal.  Consequently much of his output is highly melodic and accessible, but does contain many distinctly 20th century characteristics.  In particular, Hovhaness experimented greatly with form.  He was also not afraid to leave the tonality vague, or use dissonance.  Many of his works utilize drones or ostinato patterns that are similar to traditional Armenian music.



If you enjoy Copland, Barber, Hindemeth, Diamond, Schuman or similar modern composers, Hovhaness is essential listening.
